(On phone numbers below, if you are calling from outside of Nigeria, the country code is 234, and drop the preceding 0.)

GETTING PAPERS
Here are some links that can help you get your traveling papers no matter where you are arriving from:
(On an interesting note, I read on August 12, 1998 that new visas and new passports are to be introduced in the country in the near future. On September 24th, I read that new machine-readable passports were already being issued in Abuja.)

WEATHER
Here are some links that will provide you weather in some of the popular Nigerian cities, some have forecasts, and some have historical data. These should give you an idea of what type of weather to pack for. I will say this though "CARRY AN UMBRELLA OR RAINCOAT, especially if you are traveling in the rainy season".

GETTING THERE
You can get to Nigeria by air or by water (unless you live on another African continent, I would not suggest trying to get there by land). However, I do not currently have information on how to get to Nigeria by water, so the information on this section is strictly for air travel.

TRAVEL AGENCIES
The following is a list of travel agencies that may be able to assist you with booking flights to Nigeria (on most of them, enter your starting point, your destination, dates, and find out availability and cost).
Also, some of the information on the transportation page may be useful for the traveler.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Here are some links that can provide you with information on accommodations in Nigeria, unless of course, you have people to stay with (most Nigerians are pretty hospitable). This first list contains links to sites that have accommodation listings in numerous cities.
The following links were limited to Lagos and Abuja at the time I made this list (7/31/98).

GETTING AROUND
BY ROAD
If you go to Nigeria, and don't already have a way to get around locally, the next easiest way to get around would probably be to hire a taxi driver.
Another option is to get a driver once you get there, these are sometimes available at the hotels. Also, Nigerian Galleria has a section on car hire rates but at this time (7/31/98) they are only from the Lagos Airport. Other airports may or may not have similar services.
Also, sometimes you can get tours by roads that will allow you to see the country, and where the driver will explain some of the places he is driving through. These are available by luxury buses, mini-buses, touring saloon cars, and vary in price and quality.
If you plan on renting a car, I have not found many resources online. I
did find a link at FinDat.com
that may soon have some. Of course, once you are there, you can try the
local travel agencies listed on this page, and
they may or may not be able to help (let me know if you find out).
Also, you could try taking public transportation, but in most cities, that can be a real ordeal.

BY RAIL
There are also country tours available by rail, and it is relatively inexpensive, and is a convenient way to travel long distances. The rail system is constantly being improved. Once in Nigeria, you can get more information about schedules and fares.

CURRENCY CONVERSIONS
Unless the conversion rates between Nigeria and most other countries changes, it doesn't take much to go there and feel rich after converting most currencies. Here are some links that will show you just how much Nigerian Naira you can get for your currency (of course, you can use them to convert from ANY currency to ANY OTHER currency).

BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW
This section mentions some things that make your visit less-than-enjoyable. Depending on where you are coming from, some of these may not be an issue.
- Security: Some places in Nigeria are not that safe. Always take precautions when traveling, and don't trust too easily.
- Roads: Not all roads are paved, especially when you start to get out of the cities.
- Traffic: Traffic can be a huge problem. Go-slows, traffic-jams, etc. can be very common in the cities.
- Water: Once again, depending on where you are staying, there may not always be a constant supply of running water. Also, if there is running water, it may not be suitable for drinking, but in those cases, the place will usually have a supply that is (it just may not be from the tap).
- Electricity: This is not always in constant supply. If the place you are staying does not have an electric generator, there may be times that you will be without power. However, most places are equipped for this in terms of having an ample supply of candles, lanterns, etc.
- Phones: Phones are not readily available in all areas. They are more common in the cities though.
- Scams: I have a link to scams that you should be careful to avoid. Of course, this is not limited to the traveler.
- Health: If you are concerned about the health risks of traveling to Nigeria, Nigerian Galleria has a section on health advice for travelers, and the Center for Disease Control has a health guide for travel to West Africa.
- Of course, there are other links with warnings to the traveler, but I take them with a grain of salt.
A quick glance at this link shows that it might be pretty helpful.
