    ART

Nigeria's art dates back a long time, over 2000 years by some archeological beliefs. The Nok Terracotta and the Igbo Ukwu are examples of some excavations that have been discovered by archeologists to indicate a highly developed artistic and technologically based civilization. Some of the really old art found shows very much detail and very distinctive features suggesting technological skills way back when. The Nok art for instance, has many images made from iron-smelting. The Igbo artifacts show skills in bronze and copper utensils as well as sacred objects. The Ife bronze heads are said to represent some of the past Ooni's (rulers) of Ife.

The Benin have a lot of ancient artwork that has become famous over different parts of the world, and they can be seen in museums around the world. Most Benin art is made from bronze, though there is art made of other materials.

Today, art in Nigeria includes a wide range of exhibits, including but not limited to sculptures, masks and paintings. Of course, when you talk about 'art', there are also other cultural activities such as festivals, dances, theater, etc.

However, they say "a picture is worth a thousand words", so rather than continue to talk about it, you can look at some pictures on the pictures page that relate to art and culture. And you can find out more about some of the festivals and dances (in terms of where they are) on the tourism page.

Here are some other links on art that may be of interest to you. Some of them may be Africa as a whole and not just Nigeria. Of course, you can also search the web.

    LITERATURE

Literature is big in Nigeria, and some Nigerian writers are known worldwide.

Here are some links that may be of interest to get information about some of Nigeria's writers. Also, you can search for books (ANY books) at BarnesandNoble.com or Amazon.com directly from this page

    MEDIA

Regarding media, there are newspapers, magazines, radio, and television, and not unlike most of the rest of the world, the internet is quickly becoming another means of communication and entertainment. Here is a 1996 paper on "Telecommunications in Nigeria" that is quite detailed.

    NEWSPAPERS & MAGAZINES

Nigeria has many newspapers, and with English being the official language, many of them are in English (and the national ones are definitely in English).

There are also local newspapers, the number of which are growing, especially in the major cities.

Most Nigerian magazines cover the popular foreign news. Also, foreign newspapers and magazines are available in some areas, especially at hotels and airports.

Other links regarding and or showing the written media are: Back to Contents

    RADIO

The Federal Radio Corporation operates a network of broadcasting stations all over the country. Many state governments have their state radio broadcasting station. Also, many states both AM and FM stations. Several states use the FM stations for entertainment and commercial programs while using the AM stations for mass mobilization, news, educational and language programs. Broadcasting is by law a public enterprise and private ownership is prohibited.

Some links with Nigerian radio include:

    TELEVISION

Yes, Nigeria also has television. Television broadcasting is also a public enterprise. The Nigeria Television Authority has a network of stations which covers all the states of the nation. Each states has at least one television station, and some states have multiple stations. The number of channels depends on the station, and not all channels run for 24 hours a day (when I was home, they came on around 4 in the afternoon, and went off around midnight). There are also subscription channels like CNN, Eurosport, and others.

    MOVIES & THEATER

Movies have existed in Nigeria for a long time, but they have not always been readily available outside of Nigeria. With the wonders of the internet, here are some sites that you can use to find Nigerian movies:

    INTERNET

If you haven't already realized it, there are many Nigerians on the Internet, and some of these sites are from Nigeria directly (mine is not, for now anyway). Rather than go into it, I will give links to the following: Of course, if you haven't seen the list of other links on Nigeria, that page may be of interest as well.
