It is with great pleasure and pride that we announce the international event honoring excellence in the African arts & Sciences "African World Music Awards 2002" This event will honor the outstanding and overwhelming achievements of African artists during the prior year.

Over the years, millions of Africans have made their homes in and outside the African continent, yet each retain a warm and vibrant link with their motherland through the medium of music. African World Music Award is a celebration and admiration for African music worldwide.

This event, will be held in Hollywood California November 2002. Unparalleled and lavish resources in terms of planning, capital and people will make this World African Music Award a historic event

The most extensive and elaborate preparation are underway to make the African World Music Award night a spectacular and dazzling event. No effort will be spared to make this event.. Live entertainment from leading stars of the African music industry worldwide and from Diaspora will be part of a stage show glowing with laser lights and pyrotechnics. Various celebrities from the African and Hollywood Music industry, as well as business magnets, elected officials, and other dignitaries will attend this event. Apart from a live hall-filled audience, the event will be telecast on African’s several television networks and TV stations throughout four continents.

HOW ARE BANDS NOMINATED FOR THE AFRICAN WORLD MUSIC AWARDS?

In January, the Academy of African Music Arts & Sciences (AAMAS) mails an open nomination ballot to its members. Members may nominate whomever they choose for performance categories. For recording categories, eligible recordings must have been released between December 1, and November 30, of award year. It is suggested that artists/bands notify the AAMAS of their record release information by December 15th each year, if available. Recordings must be available for sale to the general public.

DO I OR MY BAND NEED TO SUBMIT A RECORDING TO BE ELIGIBLE?
No. Only your release information is necessary. By December 15 each year, please submit your name or the name of band, name of recording, release date and category in which it should be considered. The AAMAS compiles a list of eligible recordings each year that is as comprehensive as possible. We include this list with the ballot as a helpful tool for voters, but recordings not included on the list are still eligible for nomination by the voting public.

WHO VOTES FOR THE AFRICAN WORLD MUSIC AWARDS?
The voting database consists of thousands in the African musical community across five continents. If you are actively involved in the African international music industry then you are a qualified voter. Please call 202 248 6429 or email vote@aamasusa.org. Musicians, managers, booking agents, media representatives, club management and others are all eligible to apply or vote.

HOW ARE PERFORMERS SELECTED FOR THE AFRICAN WORLD MUSIC AWARDS SHOW?
Potential performers are selected by a committee of Advisory Council and Executive Board members, chaired by Mr Ben Odiase.

Please understand that there are a great many artists who wish to perform at the African World Music Awards and only a very small number can be accommodated. Basically, there are seven or eight slots available at a maximum. Some of our principal criteria are:

(1) The ability of the artist to draw an audience.

2) The lack of overlap between the artist and the other acts that will be on the bill as we strive to present an array of diverse musical styles at the African World Music Awards show.

(3) Public recognition and fame of the artist.

(4)The quality of the artist (while this is somewhat subjective, we try to put on acts that represent the best in their respective genre). Selections are made by the Talent Committee, which submits recommendations to the Executive Board. The Executive Board makes the final decisions and is at liberty to reject any or all of the recommendations of the Talent Committee. Again, let us stress that very few of the many deserving acts who want to perform at the African World Music Awards will be invited to do so.

WHERE CAN I BUY TICKETS FOR AFRICAN WORLD MUSIC AWARDS?
Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and generally go on sale in July. Corporate tables are available through the African World Awards in Washington DC. and can be purchased in advance of the show as available by calling (202) 248-6429 our east coast regional office (401)277-9929

Entry Procedures

African World Music Awards is open all and every artist/song of African origin. And must be first release by January first of awards year. AWMA receives entries of only one song/piece per artist or group from African and all continents in different categories. These entries are accepted year round, but a cut date of May 30th to qualify for pre-selection committee. Late entries are not encouraged. Four artist are eventually selected for each prescribed category. For a listing of our various categories, click on the category section of this page. Artist, producers, engineers and others in the arts are encouraged to participate and show--off their works.
